The cluster is in the Maiella massif, with high limestone ridges and forested mountain slopes immediately around Palena. The Aventino river valley runs through the area, and the upper Sangro valley is close by. This is inside the Maiella National Park. The nearest ski area is Passolanciano-Majelletta on the Maiella, roughly an hour’s drive, and Roccaraso-Aremogna is also reachable in about an hour depending on road conditions. The nearest town of some size is Sulmona, which has full services and a substantial historic centre. The area is known for mountain landscapes, beech forests, transhumance country and access to the eastern Abruzzo highlands.
