The cluster is in the built-up area of Como at the south end of Lake Como. Lake Como is the defining feature within the radius, with the first basin and its steep pre-Alpine slopes immediately around the city. The Spina Verde Regional Park lies on the hills just west of the city. Brunate sits directly above Como on the slope and the Triangolo Lariano rises across the lake. Como is the nearest town of size and has the walled historic centre, the cathedral, lakefront and main rail links to Milan and Switzerland. The area is known for the lake and for silk.
