The main mountain backdrop is the Lepontine Alps around the upper lake, with Monte Legnone prominent across the water and the Valvarrone and Valtellina mountains visible from this part of the shore. The area is inside the Alto Lario landscape of steep wooded slopes, stone villages and terraced ground descending toward the lake. The nearest town of size is Gravedona ed Uniti on the lake, which has a full lakeside centre, services and the Romanesque church of Santa Maria del Tiglio; Menaggio and Colico are the other larger centres around the upper lake within daily driving distance. The area is known for the upper Lake Como shore, lake views, sailing and wind sports on the northern basin, and access from the lake into valleys such as the Valchiavenna and Valtellina.
