The cluster is in the Crati valley at the foot of the Coastal Range, with the Sila mountains farther east beyond Cosenza. The Crati river system shapes the plain around Rende and Cosenza. The nearest substantial town is Cosenza, which has a large historic centre, services, rail connections and the University of Calabria in the Rende area. The old centre of Rende stands on a ridge above the valley. Paola on the Tyrrhenian coast is the nearest main seaside outlet, but the coast is outside the immediate 15 km landscape. This part of Calabria is known for a mix of hill towns, valley-floor development and access routes between the Tyrrhenian side and the inland mountains.
