The Crati river system shapes the plain around Rende and Cosenza. The nearest substantial town is Cosenza, which has a large historic centre, services, rail connections and the University of Calabria in the Rende area. The old centre of Rende stands on a ridge above the valley. Paola on the Tyrrhenian coast is the nearest main seaside outlet, but the coast is outside the immediate 15 km landscape.
