The cluster is on the Tyrrhenian coast of Calabria, with beaches and the sea immediately nearby. Paola is backed at short distance by the western Calabrian hills and the lower Coastal Range above the shore. The Sanctuary of San Francesco di Paola is in the town and is a major religious site. Along this stretch the nearest larger centre is Cosenza inland, with full city services, rail connections and hospitals. The area is known for its coastal setting and for the cult of San Francesco di Paola.
