The cluster is in the Sila, on the high forested plateau of central Calabria. Lake Ampollino lies within this area, and the upper course of the Neto river rises on the plateau nearby. Much of the surrounding landscape falls within Sila National Park. The nearest ski lifts are at Lorica on Lake Arvo, roughly an hour by road, and on Monte Curcio at Camigliatello Silano, a little over an hour depending on the exact starting point. San Giovanni in Fiore is the main town of this part of the Sila and has a substantial historic centre and the Florense Abbey. The area is known for conifer forests, high pastures, potatoes and mushrooms.
