This is on the Ionian coast at the Gulf of Taranto, with long low shores and the mouth area of the Esaro nearby. The marine protected area of Capo Rizzuto begins south of the city, with a coastal stretch of headlands, small coves and clear shallows within about 15 km. Crotone is the main town of the area and has a port, a seafront, a substantial historic center and the Castello di Carlo V. The area is known for its Magna Graecia archaeological remains, especially Capo Colonna just south of the city.
