Fossano sits on the plain between the Stura di Demonte and Tanaro systems, with the Maritime and Cottian Alps visible to the south and west on clear days. The Stura di Demonte runs nearby west of town. The nearest larger centre is Cuneo, which has the main services, rail links and a substantial historic centre. Fossano itself is known in the area for its old centre on a raised position above the plain and for the Castello degli Acaja.
