This is the Roero hill country, with vine-covered ridges, orchards and small wooded sections between the Tanaro plain and the first Langhe hills. The Tanaro river runs nearby to the west. The nearest town of size is Alba, which has a substantial historic centre, services and rail connections. Barolo and the core Langhe wine hills are outside the immediate area, but Canale itself is in a wine-growing zone known for Roero wines and peaches. The Vineyard Landscape of Piedmont UNESCO site includes parts of Roero, though not all of this immediate area falls inside the core protected zones.
