This is an Alpine area with steep wooded slopes, high pasture and stone hamlets, with the upper valley leading toward high passes on the French border. The Monviso area is nearby to the east side of the valley system, and the broader Monviso landscapes shape this part of the province even where the peak is not at the door. Sampeyre is a base for mountain walking and for Occitan culture and music in the upper valleys of Cuneo.
