The Scrivia river runs through this area, and within about 15 km the main landscape is a mix of valley floor, cultivated fields and low hills around Tortona and the roads toward the Apennine passes. Tortona is the nearest town of size, with a full set of daily services and a historic centre. This part of south-eastern Piedmont is known for wine hills and mixed farming, with Timorasso vineyards established around the Tortona hills.
