The Grana stream runs through the valley. Much of the upper valley falls within the Parco naturale del Monviso system. The nearest ski area is around Castelmagno, with small local lifts and cross-country terrain in the upper valley, roughly 30–40 minutes by road depending on snow and starting point. Cuneo is the nearest town of size, with full services, rail connections and a substantial historic centre. The area is known for mountain pasture, stone hamlets and Castelmagno cheese from the upper valley.
