The Maritime Alps rise south of Villanova Mondovì, with the first alpine valleys starting a few kilometres away around the lower Ellero and Maudagna basins. The Ellero runs through the area, and the Pesio valley and the entrance to the Ligurian Alps are nearby. The Parco naturale del Marguareis begins within this part of the Cuneo Alps, with its limestone massif, caves and high pasture country. The nearest ski lifts are at Frabosa Soprana, Prato Nevoso and Artesina, roughly 15 to 25 minutes by road depending on the exact base station. Mondovì is the nearest town of size, with a substantial historic upper town, services and rail connections. The wider area is known for the Monregalese foothills, karst landscapes and access to the Cuneo alpine valleys.
