Much of the upper valley is tied to the Parco naturale delle Alpi Marittime and the protected alpine area around Argentera and the French border. The nearest ski terrain is at Limone Piemonte, roughly an hour by road, with smaller valley-side winter areas also in the province. Cuneo is the nearest town of size, with full services, rail connections and a substantial historic centre. The area is known for Alpine passes including the Colle della Maddalena route toward France and for mountain villages in the Valle Stura.
