The area is in the Erei mountains of central-northern Sicily, with a high hill landscape of grain fields, pasture and wooded slopes. The Salso valley lies below the town and the Nebrodi range begins to the north, with the southern edge of the Parco dei Nebrodi within this radius. The nearest skiing is at Piano Battaglia in the Madonie, roughly 1 hour 30 minutes by road, which is outside the local landscape. Nicosia itself is the main town nearby, with a large historic center, cathedral, hospital and everyday services for the surrounding inland area. The area is known for inland Sicilian hill country, cereals, livestock and mountain cheeses.
