The Bormida runs a few kilometres east of Gamalero, and the Tanaro is also nearby in the wider Alessandria plain. Within about 15 km the main centres are Alessandria and Acqui Terme; Alessandria has the full range of city services and rail connections, while Acqui Terme is a spa town with a substantial historic centre. This part of Piemonte is known for mixed farming and for the wine landscape of the wider Monferrato area, but the core scenery around the village itself is ordinary lowland and cultivated fields rather than a singular named landscape.
