This is the lower Ferrara plain, with reclaimed agricultural land, canals and drainage works as the dominant landscape. The Po di Volano and the wetland belt of the Valli di Comacchio are the main named natural features in the wider area, but they lie outside the immediate 15 km radius. Ferrara is the nearest city of size, with a large historic centre and UNESCO status, but it is beyond the local landscape around Portomaggiore. The area is known for arable farming and for the bonifica landscape of the eastern Po plain.
