Ferrara sits in the Po plain between branches of the Po and the lower Reno basin, in a flat agricultural landscape of reclaimed land, canals and embankments. The Po di Volano runs through the city and the Po Delta regional park begins nearby to the east, with lagoons, wetlands and pinewoods around the delta but mostly outside the immediate urban area. Ferrara is a city of size with a complete historic centre, the Este Castle, long Renaissance walls and major services. Ferrara has UNESCO status for its Renaissance city and, with the Po Delta, as a cultural landscape. The area is known for reclaimed plain agriculture and for the historic Este city.
