This is the lower Po plain around Ferrara, with flat agricultural land cut by canals and branches of the Po; the Po di Volano runs through the city and the Po Grande and Po di Primaro are nearby in the province. The Parco del Delta del Po lies east of the city, with lagoon, wetland and reclaimed plain landscapes, but its core areas are outside the immediate urban surroundings. Ferrara is itself the nearest city of size and has a large Renaissance historic centre with the Castello Estense; the city is on the UNESCO World Heritage list for Ferrara, City of the Renaissance, and its Po Delta cultural landscape extension. The area is known for Renaissance urban planning, irrigated agriculture and the Po Delta environment.
