This cluster is in the built-up area of Ferrara, so the lived setting is the city plain rather than a wider rural landscape. The Po di Volano runs through the city and the Po delta wetlands lie farther east, but they are outside the immediate 15 km landscape. Ferrara is a provincial capital with a large brick historic centre and major Renaissance monuments, including the Este Castle and the UNESCO-listed city planned under the Addizione Erculea. The surrounding terrain is the flat lower Po plain, with canals, embankments and intensive agriculture.
