The cluster is in the northern Apennines, in the upper Santerno valley near the Tuscan-Emilian watershed. The Firenzuola area lies inside or against the edge of the Parco regionale della Vena del Gesso Romagnola system on the Romagna side, and the landscape around here is of wooded ridges, passes and gypsum outcrops rather than low Tuscan hill country. The nearest ski area is Monte Faggiola above the Campigna/Muraglione side, roughly an hour by road, with larger lifts farther away in the Emilia-Romagna Apennines. Firenzuola is a small mountain town with everyday services; for a larger centre people look mainly to Borgo San Lorenzo or Imola, both beyond the immediate radius. The area is known for pietra serena sandstone and for the mountain passes between Florence and Romagna, including the Futa and Raticosa roads nearby.
