The area lies in the Mugello basin, with the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines close to the north and east. Lake Bilancino is within the area. Part of the Foreste Casentinesi, Monte Falterona e Campigna National Park reaches the northeastern side of Mugello, around the Falterona massif. The nearest ski area is Monte La Doganaccia on the Apennine side above Cutigliano, roughly an hour and a half by road; there are also smaller Mugello-side slopes in season around Passo della Colla and Monte Faggiola. Borgo San Lorenzo is the main centre of Mugello, with rail links, shops, schools and hospital services, and Florence is the nearest major city for higher-order services. The wider area is known for Mugello countryside, chestnut woods, villas and Medici associations, and for the Mugello circuit at Scarperia.
