The area around
Location score 71/100The area sits in the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines, with ridges, wooded slopes and mountain pasture around the upper Santerno valley. The Santerno river runs through Firenzuola and the landscape nearby includes the badlands and eroded clay formations of the Sasso di Castro and the Passo del Giogo area. Part of the territory falls in the Foreste Casentinesi, Monte Falterona e Campigna National Park on its eastern side, though the town itself is outside the main core. The nearest ski area of note is Monte Faggiola above the San Pellegrino pass area, with larger lifts in the Corno alle Scale area roughly an hour away by road. Borgo San Lorenzo is the nearest larger Mugello town with rail services, shops and weekly services, while Florence and Bologna are both practical for higher-level services but outside the immediate landscape. The area is known for pietra serena sandstone and for the mountain passes between Tuscany and Emilia.
