The cluster lies in the Mugello basin, enclosed by the Tuscan-Romagnolo Apennines. Lake Bilancino is within this area. Much of the surrounding upland falls in the Parco Nazionale delle Foreste Casentinesi, Monte Falterona e Campigna and the nearby Giogo-Casaglia ridge is part of the Apennine watershed. The nearest ski area is Monte Faggiola on the Mugello side of the Apennines, with larger lifts at Abetone much farther away and not part of the immediate landscape. Borgo San Lorenzo is the nearest town of size, with rail connections, services and a working town centre, and Florence is the main city used for higher-order services and commuting. Scarperia is known for knife-making and for the Mugello Circuit nearby.
