The area is in the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines, with wooded ridges, mountain pastures and the upper valleys of the Santerno and its tributaries. Part of the territory falls in the Parco nazionale delle Foreste Casentinesi, Monte Falterona e Campigna on the Tuscan side of the range. The nearest ski area is Monte Faggiola above the Firenzuola-Piancaldoli side, with larger lifts at the Abetone area roughly 1.5 hours away. Borgo San Lorenzo and Imola are the nearest larger towns for fuller services; Florence and Bologna are both reachable for higher-order services but are outside the local landscape. The area is known for pietra serena sandstone and for mountain villages and passes on the road between Florence and Bologna.
