The Santerno valley runs through Firenzuola, and the area is close to the Passo della Futa and Passo del Giogo on the ridge between Tuscany and Emilia-Romagna. Part of the municipal territory lies in the Parco regionale della Vena del Gesso Romagnola, a protected gypsum ridge landscape just to the northeast. The nearest ski area is Monte La Nuda near Passo della Futa, with small local lifts in roughly 20–30 minutes when operating; larger Apennine skiing is farther away and does not define the immediate area. Borgo San Lorenzo is the nearest larger town in the Mugello, with rail services, shops and basic services; Florence is farther south beyond the passes. The area is known for mountain roads, chestnut and woodland landscapes, and the Gothic Line sites around the Futa pass.
