The Parco dei Gessi Bolognesi e Calanchi dell'Abbadessa lies to the north-west but outside the immediate 15 km landscape. The nearest skiing is the small Corno alle Scale area, roughly an hour's drive, so it is not part of the local setting. Bologna is the nearest large city, with full services and major rail links, but it is outside the immediate landscape. This part of the Apennines is known for mountain roads, woodland and the historic route between Bologna and Florence.
