The Adriatic coast is close, and the Gulf of Manfredonia lies below the south side of Monte Sant'Angelo. Much of the surrounding area falls within Gargano National Park. The nearest substantial ski area is at Campitello Matese, well outside daily local landscape range and not relevant to the setting here. Manfredonia is the nearest larger town with a port, services and rail connections inland. Monte Sant'Angelo has UNESCO status through the Sanctuary of San Michele and is also listed among I Borghi più belli d'Italia. The area is known for the pilgrimage sanctuary, the Foresta Umbra inland on Gargano, and traditional pastoral and olive-growing landscapes.
