The cluster is in the Daunian Mountains, in inland upland country on the Puglian side of the Apennines. The area is part of the Monti Dauni landscape of wooded ridges, grain fields and hill villages, and the Cervaro valley lies nearby. Within about 15 km there are small historic centres such as Bovino, which is listed among I Borghi più belli d'Italia. The nearest larger town of size is Foggia, which provides the main rail links, hospitals and wider services, but it lies outside the immediate landscape. The area is known for hill agriculture, woodland and the historic transhumance routes between the Apennines and the Tavoliere.
