The Gargano promontory surrounds the area, with limestone hills dropping toward the Adriatic. The Adriatic coast is close here, with a sequence of bays, sea cliffs and shingle beaches around Mattinata and the Monte Saraceno side. Much of the surrounding territory falls within Gargano National Park. The nearest town of size is Manfredonia, which provides the larger range of services and port-related facilities on the gulf. Monte Sant’Angelo is nearby on the Gargano and is linked to the UNESCO listing for the Longobards in Italy through the Sanctuary of San Michele. The area is known for olive groves on terraces, citrus around the plain of Mattinata, and access to the Gargano coast.
