The Foreste Casentinesi, Monte Falterona e Campigna National Park begins at Santa Sofia and covers the mountain ridges and forested valleys immediately around the area. The upper Bidente valley runs through the town, and the landscape within reach is Apennine, with beech and fir woods, reservoir valleys and ridgelines toward the Tuscan border. The Campigna forest and Passo del Muraglione are nearby in daily use terms, and the closest small ski area is Campigna with short local lifts, roughly half an hour by road. The nearest larger town is Forlì, which provides the main rail links, hospital and larger services. The area is known for the Casentino forests and for the Ridracoli reservoir and dam in the same mountain system.
