The cluster is in the first hills between the Romagna plain and the Apennines. The Montone valley runs through the area, and the Acquacheta stream valley and the Foreste Casentinesi, Monte Falterona e Campigna National Park begin within roughly 15 km to the south-west. Castrocaro and Terra del Sole preserve a substantial historic built environment, with the fortress of Castrocaro on the hill and the planned fortified town of Terra del Sole beside the valley road. Forlì is the nearest city of size, with full services, rail connections and hospitals. The area is known for thermal baths and for mixed hill farming with vineyards and orchards.
