The area sits in the northern Apennines on the upper Bidente valley. The Parco Nazionale delle Foreste Casentinesi, Monte Falterona e Campigna lies immediately nearby and covers much of the surrounding mountain landscape, with beech and fir forest and ridges toward Monte Falco and Monte Falterona. The Bidente river runs through Santa Sofia. The nearest substantial town is Forlì, which provides the main rail connections, hospitals and larger services. The area is known for forested Apennine scenery and for access to the Casentinesi forests.
