The cluster is in the upper Bidente valley in the Romagna Apennines. The Casentino Forests, Monte Falterona and Campigna National Park lies immediately around Santa Sofia, with the Campigna forest and the ridge toward Monte Falco and Monte Falterona within this area. The Bidente river runs through the valley. The nearest ski lifts are at Campigna, about 20 km away by road, so outside the immediate area. Santa Sofia itself is the main local centre, with basic services and a small historic core on the river. The area is known for forested Apennine slopes, reservoirs and access to the national-park valleys.
