The Buthier valley system is the main landscape framework here, with steep forested sides, pasture and high alpine ground above the villages. The area is close to the lower edge of the Gran San Bernardo route toward Switzerland, and the Grand Combin and other high border peaks dominate the wider mountain setting. The nearest substantial town is Aosta, which has full services and major Roman remains including the Arch of Augustus, the theatre and city walls. Pila ski lifts are reached from Aosta in roughly half an hour by road, and the Crévacol ski area near Saint-Rhémy-en-Bosses is also about half an hour away. The area is known for alpine pasture, fontina production and the mountain road toward the Great St Bernard pass.
