Much of the surrounding high ground lies in the Monte Rosa area, with the Mont Mars Nature Reserve nearby above Fontainemore. The nearest ski lifts are in the Monterosa Ski domain around Gressoney-Saint-Jean and Staffal, roughly 20–35 minutes by road depending on the access point. The nearest town of some size is Pont-Saint-Martin at the mouth of the valley, with everyday services and rail access; Ivrea is farther away outside the immediate landscape. The area is known for Walser settlements and alpine pastoral landscapes in the upper Lys Valley.
