The Dora Baltea runs through the valley here. Châtillon is next to Saint-Vincent, the nearest larger centre in this stretch of valley, with everyday services and rail access along the Aosta line. The Ussel Castle stands above the town, and the area is known as one of the lower-valley gateways toward Valtournenche and the Cervino/Matterhorn side, although the main lifts are farther up-valley and do not count as part of the immediate landscape. The wider area is known for alpine valley scenery and castles along the Aosta Valley corridor.
