Much of the area is high alpine terrain with side valleys, larch woods, pastures and peaks on the French border; the local landscape is tied to the routes toward the Col du Mont and the high ridges above Bonne and Usellières. The nearest ski area is Valgrisenche itself, with small local lifts in the valley and the main Aosta Valley resorts reached by longer drives outside the 15 km landscape. The nearest town of size is Aosta, which has the full range of services and major Roman monuments, but it is outside the immediate valley setting. The area is known for alpine hiking, ski touring, mountaineering and mountain pasture traditions including Fontina production.
