The Arno rises in this part of the valley and the upper Casentino landscape is a mix of forested slopes, chestnut woods and small hill villages. Much of the area falls within the Parco Nazionale delle Foreste Casentinesi, Monte Falterona e Campigna, whose forest cover extends across the surrounding mountains. The nearest ski area is on Monte Falco at Campigna on the Romagna side, roughly an hour by road depending on the exact hamlet. Bibbiena is the nearest town of size, with rail access, shops and services, and Poppi nearby has a substantial historic centre with a castle. Raggiolo is known as a stone village linked to chestnuts and woodland traditions, and the Casentino more broadly is known for forests, monasteries such as La Verna and Camaldoli, and mountain walking.
