The area sits in the upper Tiber valley, with the Valtiberina landscape of cultivated valley floor and wooded hills, and the Tuscan-Romagnolo Apennines rising nearby. The Tiber is the main river of the area. The Monti Rognosi nature reserve lies close to Anghiari, with badlands, serpentinite outcrops and Mediterranean-type scrub unusual for inland Tuscany. The Casentino Forests National Park is farther away and does not define the immediate 15 km surroundings. Anghiari itself is a preserved hill town with intact walls and a steep medieval centre. Sansepolcro is the nearest larger town, with services, schools, shops and Piero della Francesca works in the civic museum. Anghiari is a member of I Borghi più belli d'Italia. The area is known for the Battle of Anghiari and for tobacco, olive oil and mixed farming in the Valtiberina.
