The Arno runs through the wider valley to the west, and the Ciuffenna stream cuts through the historic centre of Loro Ciuffenna. The area is within the ANPIL Le Balze, the zone of eroded clay and sandstone pinnacles associated with the Balze del Valdarno landscape. The nearest substantial town is Montevarchi in the Valdarno, with rail links, shops and services; Arezzo is the main provincial city farther southeast. The area is known for olive groves, terraced hillsides, stone villages and the Balze landforms that also appear in the Valdarno around Castelfranco di Sopra and Piantravigne.
