The cluster is in the Casentino valley under the Apennines, with the forests and ridges of the Parco Nazionale delle Foreste Casentinesi, Monte Falterona e Campigna within the local area. The Arno rises nearby on Monte Falterona and runs through the valley. Pratovecchio and Stia are the main local centres, with a working historic core and rail connection down the valley toward Arezzo and Florence. Camaldoli and the sanctuary and forest area of La Verna are in the wider Casentino and are among the places this area is known for, together with chestnut woods and mountain walking.
