The Tevere runs through Pieve Santo Stefano, and the Montedoglio reservoir lies just south of the town. The Parco Nazionale delle Foreste Casentinesi, Monte Falterona e Campigna begins within this area on the western side of the valley, with forested mountain slopes and passes toward the Casentino. The nearest ski area is Monte Fumaiolo on the northern Apennine side, about 30-40 minutes by road depending on the access point and snow conditions. Sansepolcro is the nearest larger town, with a substantial historic centre, services and museums linked to Piero della Francesca. The area is known for the upper Valtiberina landscape, Apennine forests and the Archivio Diaristico Nazionale based in Pieve Santo Stefano.
