The Arno rises on Monte Falterona a few kilometres away, and the Casentino Forests National Park extends on the ridges and forested slopes above the valley. The nearest ski area is Campigna on the Romagna side of the Apennines, reached by mountain road in about an hour from Stia, with larger Abetone much farther away and not relevant to the immediate setting. Bibbiena is the nearest larger town in the valley, with the usual rail and road services and a working historic centre; Arezzo is the main city for higher-level services farther down the valley. The area is known for the Casentino forests, for Vallombrosan and Camaldolese monastic sites in the wider valley, and for the wool tradition of Stia.
