The cluster lies in the Casentino valley under the Casentino Apennines. The Arno rises in this area on Monte Falterona, and the upper Arno valley is part of the local landscape. The Parco Nazionale delle Foreste Casentinesi, Monte Falterona e Campigna is immediately nearby and covers a large part of the surrounding mountains and forests. Pratovecchio and Stia are the nearest small centres, with a railway terminus, basic services, and historic built fabric linked to the Casentino valley. The area is known for chestnut woods, forested mountain slopes, and for access to the Camaldoli and La Verna side of the Apennines. Small ski fields have existed on Monte Falco in the Campigna zone, reached by a mountain drive of roughly an hour, but they are not a major resort.
