The Fiume Tevere runs through Pieve Santo Stefano, and Lake Montedoglio lies immediately south of the town. Much of the surrounding mountain area falls within the Parco Nazionale delle Foreste Casentinesi, Monte Falterona e Campigna to the west and northwest, and the Alpe della Luna ridge rises to the east on the border with Umbria and Romagna. The nearest ski area is Monte Fumaiolo, about 35–45 minutes by road, with small local lifts when operating. Sansepolcro is the nearest larger town, with full everyday services and a substantial historic centre, and Arezzo is farther down the valley for higher-level services and rail connections. The area is known for forested Apennine ridges, the upper course of the Tiber, and mountain roads linking Tuscany, Romagna and Umbria.
