Lake Trasimeno is just beyond the Tuscan border and within about 15 km of the southern side of the area. Cortona is the nearest larger historic town, with a substantial walled centre on a hill above the valley, and Arezzo and Montepulciano are the main towns in wider daily reach for services and rail connections. This part of the Val di Chiana is known for arable farming, olive groves on the hills, and Chianina cattle.
