The Tronto river runs through Ascoli Piceno. Monti Sibillini National Park begins to the north-west of the city area and is the main protected landscape in this part of southern Marche. The nearest substantial town is Ascoli Piceno itself, which has a large historic centre built in travertine, Piazza del Popolo, and the concentration of medieval and Renaissance buildings that make it one of the main historic towns of inland Marche.
