Monti Sibillini National Park begins to the northwest, with the Forca di Presta road and the Castelluccio side of the range within mountain-driving distance but outside the immediate urban area. San Giacomo above Ascoli has the nearest ski lifts, about 25 km away by road. Ascoli Piceno is the nearest town of size and has a large travertine-built historic centre with Piazza del Popolo, Piazza Arringo, many medieval towers and churches, and the Romanesque Ponte di Cecco area on the river. The city is known for travertine architecture and olive all’ascolana.
